The first Monday in May is usually dedicated to the biggest fashion event of the year and my absolute favourite event which is of course The Met Gala which takes place in New Yorks Metropolitan Museum of Art to raise funding for their Costume Institute and is organised by Vogue Magazine and of course Anna Wintour. Every year they have a different theme for the event and this year was meant to be About Time : Fashion and Duration. I am not designer obsessed and I dont own any designer pieces but I am obsessed with the Met Gala and I love seeing all the looks and designs. I honestly get so excited to see the first looks pop up on social media at 1am and scroll through them all the next day and of course do my annual post on my favourite and least favourite looks.
Unfortunately due to the Coronavirus Pandemic like a lot of other events and gatherings the event this year has been postponed until further notice and is likely not to take place this year. So because of this I decided to do a post on my favourite and memorable looks year by year. Starting with last year 2019. You can see all my previous Met Gala posts in full too by searching Gala in the search bar or going to the Basic Designer category!
Last year saw a lot of really good looks under the the theme Camp : Notes on Fashion and I think my favourite look out of it all was Halsey. I just love the style and design of this Prabal Gurung two piece with the red colour matched in with the gold accessories she just looks stunning. It reminds me of Princess Jasmine in the red outfit when Jafar steals her. It was also a good Met Gala year for the Kardashian-Jenners (except for Kris her Tommy Hilfiger look did not work for me) who wowed in Versace and Thierry Mugler. You have to give Kim credit for wearing that corset topped with a super skin tight dress to the point where she couldn’t even pee. It shows dedication and it worked because she looked Snatched. Due Lipa also had an amazing Versace look and the main thing I love about it is that it had pockets! Jourdan Dunn looked beautiful in her Zac Posen flower dress. Each petal was attached one by one to the bodice to create this look! Zac Posen is my favourite designer as his looks are always so beautiful and its quite sad that he has now closed his doors and his looks will no be gracing the Met Gala carpet.
2018 saw the theme Heavenly Bodies : Fashion and the Catholic Imagination and there were some really Heavenly looks. This year was the first and only time so far Ariana Grande attended the Met Gala wearing a beautiful Vera Wang design with a literal art print. Jourdan Dunn again looked stunning in this Diane Von Furstenberg look with that amazing high collar cape. Blake Lively who always kills it with her fashion choices looked amazing in her Versace piece complete with that gorgeous headpiece and it really gives a Game of Thrones feel but with the religious theme still strong.
2017s event hosted the theme Comme de Garcon : Art of the In-between and Ruby Rose was my favourite from that year. Her beautiful Burberry design dress was the perfect in-between of classy and edgy with its layered detailing and Ruby Rose being a bit edgy herself just made that whole look just amazing.
Now. 2016 saw my absolute all time favourite dress in the history of dresses. The theme was Manus x Machina : Fashion in an Age of Technology. Again by Zac Posen is the light up dress worn by Clare Danes. This dress is honestly my all time favourite number 1 from any Met Gala and it has yet to be beaten to me. I know Zendaya wore a cinderella style light up dress last year but that dress to me although pretty didn’t look as elegant, as chic and as flattering as this one. I am just obsessed with everything about it both unlit and lit up. Unlit, the dress is such an elegant shade of pale blue with a beautifully fitted bodice and a full but not over the top shaped skirt that still had life to flow and move with her as she walked. Lit up the dress just sparkles in the dark and I love that its not a solid light but a shimmer that catches the colour of the material. I am just head over heels in love with this dress!
Now we have the final three looks from nearly ten years ago which are
2015 – Theme of China : Through The Looking Glass. Beyonce looking incredible (as always) in a beautiful skin style Givenchy dress with beautiful jewel detailing. I love this because it is so beautifully done and is such intricate work.
2014 – Theme of Charles James : Beyond Fashion. I adore this baby faced eighteen year old Kendall Jenner who looked so pretty in her Topshop design dress. I love the almost retro feel from it and I love the simplicity of it.
2013 – Theme of Punk : Chaos to Couture. Of course it had to be Nicole Ritchie. Who else would pull of elegant punk like her. Nicole has such a unique and cool style anyway and she looked amazing in this again Topshop design dress. I love the contrast between the silver hair and the darker lip.
So there you have it all my favourite and most memorable looks from the Met Gala over the last nearly ten years. As mentioned my all time favourite has to be the Zac Posen Light Up Dress. You can see all these looks in my annual Met Gala posts which include my least favourite looks too. Another thing I will miss is the news from the event. Lets not forget the Met Gala has brought us the likes of Solange attacking Jay-z in a lift, that fight between Cardi B and Nicki Minaj, Jason Derulo falling down the stairs etc. I cannot wait to see what the next Met Gala brings!
Stay safe everyone!
